Wendy Davis Honored for Work on Rape Kit Backlog

Texas gubernatorial candidate and State Sen. Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth) has been honored by the Combined Law Enforcement Association of Texas for her her work addressing the state’s rape kit backlog, Burnt Orange Report writes. She was named “Legislative Crime Fighter of the Year, and was the only Democrat honored.

Davis championed a bill this legislative session that granted the Texas Department of Public Safety $11 million to address the almost 23,000 rape kits that are currently waiting to be tested across the state. The bill also requires that nearly all hospitals with emergency room services have trained medical personnel available to properly collect DNA and other vital evidence from victims of sexual assault.
