LifeCare Health Partners, a Plano-based healthcare services provider, has named Jim Murray its new CEO, effective April 1. Murray will replace an interim president after former CEO Phillip B. Douglas retired last year. LifeCare also announced that current COO Frank Battafarano has been promoted to president as well as chief operating officer.

Murray comes to LifeCare after spending 28 years with Louisville, Ky.-based Humana, where he served as CFO and COO. Murray is known for significantly contributing to Humana’s growth, helping increase revenue from $10.5 billion in 2000 to more than $54 billion while he was COO.

“[Murray] joined our board in the spring of 2016, and immediately impressed the other board members with his deep engagement in our strategic planning process and his financial and operational acumen,” said LifeCare chairman Jeff Goldberg. “When Jim suggested he would be interested in leading LifeCare as we continue to diversify our core services and refocus our referral sources on the value we provide, the board knew we found the right person to lead us into the future.”

Battafarano, meantime, was promoted to president as well as COO after serving as LifeCare’s chief operating officer since 2014. Prior to LifeCare, Battafarano spent 20 years with Dallas-based Kindred Health Care, where he more than doubled operating income in the hospital division, led the development of a managed care strategy, and implemented cluster-marketing strategies.

“[Battafarano] is an executive with unequaled experience … ” Murray said in a statement. “I look forward to partnering with [him] and LifeCare’s 4,000 associates to improve quality of life for the patients we serve.”
