More Health Systems Self-insuring Malpractice Risk, Study Finds

Seventy-three percent of surveyed health systems plan to self-insure the combined hospital-physician malpractice risk, according to the 12th annual Hospital and Physician Professional Liability Benchmark Analysis, released by Aon Risk Solutions.

The survey of 117 hospitals and more than 2,300 facilities, performed in conjunction with the American Society for Healthcare Risk Management, shows the growth of integrated self-insurance strategies and the challenges some systems face in terms of cost. It also examines the severity and frequency of malpractice claims over the past 1- years.

Aon Risk, the global risk management business of Aon Corp., believes that recent teaming-up efforts from physicians and hospitals will lead to major collaborative efforts on mergers, acquisitions, and risk management challenges like medical malpractice.
