Consumers Acutely Aware of Rising Healthcare Costs

Healthcare consumers are confused and angered by swiftly rising premiums and high deductibles, according to focus groups in four U.S. cities conducted by researchers for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

They found that consumers were more likely to question physician recommendations, compare quality and cost information, and delay care. In previous focus groups, consumers could not estimate their out-of-pocket costs. In these groups, participants knew their costs “practically down to the penny,” the researchers wrote.
