Kindred To Shutter White Rock Lake Location

Louisville, Ky.-based Kindred Healthcare, a hospital, nursing center, and contract rehabilitation services provider, will close its acute long-term care hospital at White Rock Lake. Kindred Hospital White Rock is expected to close by September 14, a statement online announced.

This is the first and so far only one of Kindred’s long-term care facilities in North Texas to close. Three Kindred hospital locations in the Houston area have closed since August 2016, the most recent in June, eliminating 133 staff positions.

The closure of Kindred Hospital White Rock—a 25-bed facility that reported 254 admissions in the past year—will eliminate 79 positions, the Texas Workforce Commission reported. Jeffrey Cellucci, division vice president of Kindred Healthcare, told D CEO Healthcare that “we expect to retain over half of the staff at our other Kindred hospitals in DFW.”

Most of the staff, Cellucci said, will be retained at Kindred’s long-term, acute-care hospital locations in Dallas, Dallas Central, Arlington, Mansfield, Fort Worth, and Fort Worth Southwest.

Kindred Hospital White Rock will also consolidate its services into nearby locations as a strategic move to “concentrate resources into the other Kindred Hospitals in DFW to provide the best care possible for the community.” In a statement, Kindred said it aims to complete that transition within 60 days of the White Rock closing.

In June, Kindred announced it signed a definitive agreement to exit its skilled-nursing facility business, divesting 89 facilities nationwide for $910 million. That decision followed Kindred’s 2016 third-quarter report in which the company said it lost $685.6 million. The company operates three skilled-nursing facilities in North Texas, in Fort Worth, Grapevine, and Mansfield.

Cellucci told D CEO Healthcare that the White Rock location’s closing is “unrelated to Kindred’s announced definitive agreement to divest its skilled-nursing facility business.”

Kindred is a national company with a current value of $7.2 billion. It employs more than 100,000 across 46 states and operates more than 2,600 locations.
