Baylor Scott & White, Select Medical Joint Venture Acquires Inpatient Rehab Hospital Outside Austin

The joint venture between Baylor Scott & White Health and rehab and acute care operator Select Medical will expand into the Austin area. The joint venture acquired an inpatient rehabilitation hospital in Lakeway, about 20 miles west.

The 36-bed facility will be called the Baylor Scott & White Institute for Rehabilitation – Lakeway. The transaction is expected to closed on July 1.

Baylor Scott & White’s joint venture with Select Medical was formed in 2011 and has grown to include 66 outpatient rehab clinics and three inpatient rehab hospitals. It started in North Texas, but Baylor Scott & White says in a news release that the two companies will target outpatient clinic expansion around Austin and Round Rock moving forward.

“We saw a growing need to expand our acute rehabilitation services to serve a wider patient population throughout Texas,” David Chernow, Select Medical President and CEO, says in a statement.

The announcement follows recent news of down-state expansion by Baylor Scott & White, including plans for its southernmost hospital to date, in Buda, Texas.
