Parkland Health & Hospital System has become the only hospital system in North Texas to score six accreditations from the Ultrasound Practice Accreditation Council of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.
Parkland’s Obstetrics and Gynecologic Sonography Department was awarded accreditation by the AIUM in the areas of Obstetrics; 1st through 3rd trimester; Gynecology; Adjunct in 3-D (Gyn); Fetal Echocardiography; and Adjunct Detailed Fetal Anatomic Ultrasound.
Dallas-based Parkland says the accreditations mean that registered medical sonographers and expert physicians perform and review its imaging studies, resulting in a “precise, comprehensive report system” and the “highest standard” of care for patients.
The system’s OB/GYN Sonography Department, which is part of Parkland’s Women’s and Infants Specialty Health (WISH) services, is a referral site for women’s imaging throughout the Parkland system and Northeast Texas. It also serves as a venue for clinical training of medical students, physicians, and sonographers.
“Mary Gibbs, manager of Women’s Health Diagnostic, and the team of sonographers exemplify the quality care that Parkland provides to women in the WISH division, and this national accreditation from AIUM is an acknowledgement of their excellent service,” Dr. Diane Twickler, medical director, said in a news release.
Since its launch, the OB/GYN Sonography Department has grown from a single sonographer and one exam room with a volume of roughly 3,000 ultrasound studies in 1989, to an annual volume today of more than 43,000 procedures performed at nine locations in Dallas and Tarrant counties, plus round-the-clock coverage in the ER and inpatient areas at Parkland.
Parkland’s ultrasound-guided procedures are performed by a staff of 24 registered diagnostic sonographers with credentials in obstetrics and gynecology, as well as six sonographers with credentials in Fetal Echo. The team also provides on-site, routine pregnancy imaging at seven of Parkland’s community Women’s Health Centers.
