Suspect Charged With Houston Surgeon’s Murder Kills Self

The hunt for the man suspected of murdering a Houston cardiologist killed himself on Friday as police approached, the Houston Chronicle reports. Joseph James Pappas was charged on Thursday with killing Dr. Mark Hausknecht, with the motive dating back to a surgery that left Pappas’ mother dead two decades ago. Police previously released grainy video of the incident, in which the assailant can be seen shooting Hausknecht while both men cross an intersection on bikes. Hausknecht had been on the way to work in Houston’s Texas Medical Center, on July 20, when he was shot.

A lot more detail on the moments that led to the suicide from the Chron, and Hausknecht’s obit can be found here.
