PAC Used “Unauthorized” AARP Logo in an Anti-Pete Sessions Healthcare Ad

In a TV spot called “It Shows,” House Majority Political Action Committee quoted AARP while criticizing Pete Sessions’ record on healthcare, but the AARP says the use of its name was unauthorized.

“While AARP is an advocate for affordable health care for older adults and their families, AARP did not authorize this ad to reference AARP or use AARP logo–nor did AARP participate in the production of such ads,” AARP said via release. The organization emphasized its non-partisan and encourages its members to ask questions and learn about the candidates themselves.

House Majority PAC describes itself “As the super PAC focused on holding Republicans accountable and helping Democrats win seats in the House” on its website. In 2012, it spent $36 million in several races, helping Democrats win in 63 percent of the races where it spent a “significant sum.”

The advertisement quotes the AARP discussing the American Healthcare Act (to replace the Affordable Care Act) and says “AARP calls it an age tax.” The AARP discusses the act in an article titled, “Don’t Get Fooled: The Age Tax Is a Real Thing.” It notes “severe consequences of weakening the current law that prevents insurers from charging older consumers more than three times what younger people pay.” The article goes on to say that “Premiums for older people could jump to five times the amount insurers charge younger consumers, from the limit of three times the younger consumers’ rate under the current law, the Affordable Care Act (ACA).”
