More than 37,000 registered nurses picketed outside Tenet hospitals across California in hopes that hospital management would invest in nursing staff, according to the Sacramento Bee. The California Nurses Association nurses in are in contract negotiations in eight hospitals owned by Dallas-based Tenet Healthcare.
The nurses hope to improve recruitment and retention of experienced nurses to improve patient care, CNA said. Hospitals in San Luis Obispo, Templeton, Modesto, San Ramon, Turlock, Los Alamitos, Palm Springs and Joshua Tree were all part of the protest.
CNA says that Tenet hospitals are relying more and more on “on-call” nurses, who have sometimes just finished long shifts, for scheduled procedures, the Bee reports. Nurses say that it could affect patient care and lead to more errors.
