A Post-rehab Program for the Traumatically Injured Takes Off

The success of a gym for the traumatically injured has caused it to move to a new facility, more than quadrupling its total space. Adaptive Training Foundation cut the ribbon on an 18,000-square-foot headquarters in Carrollton over the weekend. Additionally, later this month, ATF will partner with Arizona State University’s Pat Tillman Veterans Center to open a 5,000-square-foot, on-campus site to further research the effects of ATF’s 9-week program. They’re the latest milestones of a vision laid out by CEO and founder David Vobora. A former NFL linebacker and “Mr. Irrelevant”—the title given to the last pick in the NFL… Full Story

UT Southwestern Publishes Results of Pediatric Cancer Treatment Trial

Researchers with UT Southwestern’s Harold C. Simmons Comprehensive Cancer Center found during a recent trial that Larotrectinib, a cancer-treatment drug targeting a specific gene fusion occurring in certain types of cancerous tumors, was 93% effective in treating pediatric cancer cases. The report, published in The Lancet Oncology, covered 24 cases between Dec 21, 2015, and April 13, 2017, that involved a specific gene fusion wherein tropomyosin receptor kinase (TRK) fuses with another gene inside the cancer cell, causing uncontrolled TRK growth. The subjects underwent trials with Larotrectinib. Although TRK fusion occurs in a small amount of common adult cancers, higher… Full Story

Methodist Richardson Reveals Additional Plans for Ongoing Expansion

After fast-tracking plans for an $85 million expansion in June of 2017, Methodist Richardson Medical Center unveiled plans for several additional components to an ongoing construction project this week. In addition to the previously announced plans for two patient floors with 150 private patient rooms, a third cardiac catheterization lab, a new surgical operating room, and a 500-space parking garage, Methodist will create two post-anesthesia care beds and seven pre-op rooms. Construction on the parking garage began in January with an updated blueprint that includes 671 spaces, compared to the original design’s 500. Methodist has completed two portions of the… Full Story

UTA and UNT Health Science Center To Create the North Texas Genome Center

UT Arlington and the University of North Texas Health Science Center will bring high-powered gene processing capabilities to North Texas, as they partner on a new biomedical facility that will house some of the most advanced gene sequencing machines in the world. The facility, called the North Texas Genome Center, will focus on genome sequencing’s potential within the budding field of precision health, which puts a focus on a patient’s genetic makeup to provide new solutions to medical problems. The NTGC’s centerpieces are five NovaSeq6000 gene sequencers, the top-of-the-line model from Illumina Inc, a San Diego company specializing in gene… Full Story

UT Southwestern Receives More Than a Third of Latest Round of CPRIT Grant Funding

UT Southwestern Medical Center has been awarded $27,827,022 in grant funding, the Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas announced last Wednesday. Through 22 awards, UT Southwestern received 38% of the $73.5 million in total grant money disbursed. CPRIT spread the money across 57 payments to 11 different institutions. UT Southwestern had received 258 taxpayer-funded grants through CPRIT prior to this round. “Texas taxpayers’ support of CPRIT furthers research by UT Southwestern basic scientists, physician-scientists, and clinical investigators to learn more about how cancer occurs, to develop improved cancer therapies, and to step up prevention efforts,” Dr. Carlos L. A Dallas-based Company Is Helping A Woman Communicate Via Brainwaves

Last spring, someone reached out to IBM on Twitter about using artificial intelligence to help a 29-year-old woman affected by the neurological disorder Rett syndrome. The woman, named Boo, needed help communicating with the outside world. IBM’s Tim Duncan reached out to Darwin Ecosystem founder and former IBM research and development leader Thierry Hubert, and “The Cognitive Story” was born. Less than a year later, Darwin Ecosystem, a Dallas-based big data analytics company, is a finalist for the 2018 South by Southwest Interactive Innovation Award for developing a machine that uses EEG brainwave monitoring to allow limited persons to communicate.… Full Story

Sewer Gas Causes Evacuation of Forney Emergency Center

The Baylor Scott & White Emergency Center on U.S. Highway 80 in Forney was evacuated after a hazmat situation developed around noon on Tuesday. The situation stemmed from a supposed gas leak in the surrounding area that was later confirmed to be “sewer gas” by Forney public information officer Kyle Rouvaldt. Hospital officials evacuated the freestanding emergency room as a precautionary measure, Baylor Scott & White spokeswoman Julie Smith said, “moving staff and one patient to a nearby Baylor Scott & White facility.” Dallas Fire-Rescue’s hazmat crew, the Forney Fire Department, CareFlite, and the Kaufman County Office of Emergency Management… Full Story
