UTSW Researcher Awarded for Decades of Circadian Rhythm Research

UT Southwestern Medical Center Neuroscience Chairman Dr. Joseph Takahashi has received the Gruber Neuroscience Prize for his work on the molecular and genetic bases of circadian rhythms in mammals. The international award honors discoveries that advance understanding of the nervous system. Takahashi discovered Clock, the first mammalian gene controlling circadian rhythm that regulates other genes. Southwestern Medical Foundation Names Ho Din Award Winner

The  Southwestern Medical Foundation has given the Ho Din Award to Dr. Bethany Werner, recognizing her for her medical wisdom, human understanding, and compassion. Since 1943, the award has been the highest honor given to a UT Southwestern medical student. Werner graduated with honors from UT Dallas while playing for the volleyball team, was a manager and regular volunteer at the UTSW Office of Global Health’s Agape Clinic in medical school and directed a health fair. Who Won DFW Hospital Council Foundation’s Employee of the Year Awards?

The Dallas-Fort Worth Hospital Council Foundation held its Employee of the Year Luncheon last week, where 14 winners were announced among 130 nominees from 55-area hospitals. The nominations were judged by board members from the Dallas-Fort Worth Healthcare Human Resources Association, with hospitals separated into four categories of 1-99 beds, 100-250 beds, 251-499 beds and 500-plus beds. Newsweek released its list of best hospitals, and UT Southwestern Medical Center is the top hospital in Texas, ranking number 34 in the country. Baylor University Medical Center clocked in just below at number 39, and Medical City Dallas was ranked 106 in the U.S. The ranking notes the areas in which the hospitals are recognized, including neurology, pain medicine, pediatrics, and more. Castle Connolly’s Top Doctor program honored Dallas plastic surgeon Dr. Rod J. Rohrich as one of the best plastic surgeons in the country. Two Local Hospitals Named to IBM Watson Health’s Top 100

Since 1993, IBM Watson Health has published an annual study spotlighting the 100 best performing hospitals, and has named Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Grapevine and Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Southwest Fort Worth to the list.  The study looks at publicly available data for clinical, operational, and patient satisfaction metrics. IBM found that the hospitals on its list had better risk-adjusted outcomes while maintaining a lower average cost per patient and a higher profit margin than other hospitals in the study.
