Kirsten Gappelberg is the new Southwest Transplant Alliance Vice President of Marketing Communications and Foundation Relations. She will direct the organization’s community engagement activities, marketing and communications functions, and Outlive Yourself Foundation. Gappelberg has 20 years of experience in the communications and corporate social responsibility fields. Prior to STA, she led similar efforts at Mary Kay Inc., where she ran The Mary Kay Foundation. Southwest Transplant Alliance is creating a foundation to drive research and education, support organ and tissue donation, and serve the needs of donor families and transplant recipients. Called the Outlive Yourself Foundation, it was formed in partnership with Taylor’s Gift Foundation. Todd and Tara Storch founded Taylor’s Gift Foundation in 2010 after their 13-year-old daughter Taylor unexpectedly passed away, and it has supported organ donor families in multiple states since then. Southwest Transplant Alliance, a nonprofit organization that connects organ donors to recipients, broke ground on a new facility that will be the first-of-its-kind in Texas on Wednesday. The new 77,000 square-foot building will feature operating rooms, a donor recovery center, and offices. The new building is built to save time for the medical professionals who often spent hours on the road between the organ donor locations and the transplant centers. Southwest Transplant Alliance said Wednesday that it has promoted Jo Ann Arias to vice president of human resources. Arias is the former lead of human resources strategy and operations who came over to STA from Dallas-based Methodist Health System in 2009. At STA, which is one of the largest organ procurement organizations in the U.S., she’s helped establish the non-profit’s professional development program. At Methodist, Arias was the corporate director of HR. She earned her undergraduate degree and master’s from Texas Women’s University.
The Southwest Transplant Alliance snapped up a former Baylor University Medical Center Surgeon to serve on its organ procurement team. Dr. Tiffany Anthony will be Dallas-based STA’s associate medical director and an organ procurement surgeon. She specialized in liver and kidney transplants as a transplant and hepatobiliary surgeon for a decade at BUMC. She also directed the robotic donor nephrectomy program for living kidney donors and was involved in the landmark uterus transplant clinical trial. The Southwest Transplant Alliance has a new executive to head up its day-to-day operations. Sandi Lemons has joined the Dallas-based organization as its chief operating officer. STA announced the news this week. Lemons comes to STA from HCI, a private consulting firm she founded in 2017. Lemons was the president and principal consultant at the Milwaukee-based firm, consulting with more than 20 companies spanning healthcare, manufacturing, distribution, financial services, and information technology sectors.
